Mangosteen Basics and Serving Guidelines by Albert Miller, M.D.

Posted by Global Pinoy on March 28, 2007

The mangosteen fruit grows abundantly in Southeast Asia and many other areas near the equator. The natives from those regions have used the pericarp (peel) for generations. They used it as a tea, applied it to the skin, and made salves or balms to increase its use and effectiveness. Health practitioners from the region used it to treat conditions such as dysentery, skin conditions, infections, inflammation, pain, cancer, and other medical conditions. The widespread and long-term use of the mangosteen has resulted in scientific studies done in an effort to better understand what is responsible for its effectiveness. As a result, in excess of forty xanthones have already been identified in this wonderful fruit, most of which are in the pericarp. The findings from these studies are beyond the scope of this piece and are well described in the books: The X Factor by J. Frederic Templeman, M.D. and The Xanthone Effect by David Morton, Ph.D.

When selecting a mangosteen supplement, it is important to remember that rich concentrations of the beneficial xanthones are found in the pericarp. Most mangosteen products do not contain the whole fruit but merely an extract from the pericarp, therefore omitting most of the xanthone-rich pericarp.

Be certain you choose a product that includes all of the pericarp and not simply an extract. The serving suggestions in this brochure are for a juice made from the entire fruit.

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Coumadin is the only drug that requires extra caution. Decide the serving to be taken and after using the product consistently for three to five days, have your usual blood test (PT/INR) and follow your doctor’s recommendation on your coumadin dose. Changes in your coumadin dose may be needed.

INTRODUCING MANGOSTEEN EXCEPTIONS

Those people with ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease should introduce mangosteen juice to their system gradually, starting with only one tablespoon (1/2 ounce) mixed with four ounces of water and taken with food two times daily. If no cramping or diarrhea occurs, increase the serving to one tablespoon three times daily. Next, increase the morning and afternoon servings to one ounce, and then add in the noon serving. Increase it when able, and titrate up to desired serving, usually two ounces three times a day.

EXPECTATIONS

Results are extremely variable. The following is an average experience. You may expect increased energy and improved sleep patterns within the first one to two weeks. If pain is an issue, you may expect to see a decrease in your pain starting at two to four weeks, and an increase in this effect can occur gradually for three to six months.

“Let food be your medicine.” - Hippocrates

Garcinia mangostana – commonly known as mangosteen – is a fruit that has been used for thousands of years for medicinal purposes in Asia. It has been utilized for a broad spectrum of medicinal purposes including:

  • diarrheal illnesses
  • treatment for intestinal parasites
  • inflammatory diseases
  • pain control
  • fever control
  • skin conditions (dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, seborrhea, etc.)
  • burns
  • headaches
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • osteo arthritis
  • control of blood sugar in diabetes
  • allergies and asthma
  • dementia
  • anxiety and depression
  • heart attack and stroke
  • high cholesterol levels
  • viral, bacterial and fungal infections
  • fatigue and low energy states
  • GERD, stomach ulcers, and gastritis
  • immune system diseases

MANGOSTEEN BASICS

  • Refrigeration of open bottles is recommended and enhances the taste, however, there is no reason for concern if the juice is left at room temperature for up to two days. Unopened bottles need not be refrigerated but should be stored at room temperature.
  • Shake product before use.
  • The clear plastic piece inside the cap should be placed on the peg in the cap if it remains on the glass bottle when opened. This prevents leakage when you shake the juice.
  • Use an accurate measuring device for serving and take regularly.
  • Best to take with meals, if possible.
  • Dividing the serving into three times a day is much more effective than taking it one or two times a day.

SERVING RECOMMENDATIONS

Optimal individual servings may vary. The following is intended as a guideline. Your serving may be adjusted up or down to meet your needs.

ADULTS:

Good Health – using mainly for prevention

  • 1 oz. (30 ml or two tablespoons) two times daily

Minor Problems – controlled Type II diabetes, controlled high blood pressure, minor arthritis, Alzheimer’s, depression, GERD, allergies, skin rashes, and asthma

  • 1 oz. three times daily

Major Problems – rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, major depression, severe allergies, severe skin rashes, and severe asthma

  • 2 oz. three times daily

Cancer Problems – take 1 bottle daily for 21 days. Make sure to drink water at least 1 galloon to flush away toxins

CHILDREN & INFANTS:

Under 15 lbs - ¼ adult serving

15 – 30 lbs – 1/3 adult serving

30 – 60 lbs – ½ adult serving

60 – 90 lbs – ¾ adult serving

90 lbs or more – adult serving

Mangosteen juice is a non-toxic product, and there is no lethal serving. However, children may often achieve the benefits at lower servings. Dividing the servings into three times a day is much more effective than taking it one or two times a day due to the half life of mangosteen being four to six hours. Flare-ups of any diseases should be treated with increased intake until improvement occurs. Doubling or tripling the servings is recommended. However, with acute respiratory problems it is suggested to add 50 mg elemental zinc daily.

Mangosteen and Attention Deficit Disorder(ADD)/Hyperactivity (ADHD)

Posted by Global Pinoy on March 28, 2007

Many of today’s ailments can be attributed to what we take into our bodies. Much of what we consume today is loaded with toxins - pesticides, preservatives, artificial flavors and colors - all of these contribute to abnormal gastrointestinal, or GI, function.

A consequence of GI dysfunction is called “leaky-gut syndrome”. This is the inflammation and hyper-permeability of the gastrointestinal lining. When the GI lining is inflamed and hyper-permeable, it allows many more toxins, heavy metals, and free radicals into the bloodstream than would normally pass through.

In the last 30 years, scientists began researching mangosteen. Over the last three decades, a great wealth of knowledge has come out of the research performed on mangosteen and xanthones, the chemicals responsible for much of the fruit’s healing properties.

One of the great benefits of mangosteen is its ability to help alleviate the inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. When mangosteen is consumed regularly, the xanthones act as anti-inflammatories within the gut. Then the gut is not inflamed, the GI lining stops letting all these toxins through – many of which may cause symptoms found in various ailments.

HYPERACTIVITY, ADD, AND ALLERGIES

Many research studies have discovered a strong connection between hyperactive behavior in children and the existence of food allergies. One recent investigation done by Cornell Medical Center published in the Annuals of Allergy found that 73 percent of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder responded favorably to a diet that eliminated reactive foods and food additives. They concluded that dietary factors play a significant role in a majority of children with ADHD.

In her landmark work, No More Ritalin, Dr. Mary Ann Block describes her journey as a mother and a physician as she successfully treats her daughter for ADHD by addressing allergies and food sensitivities, along with impaired digestion, blood-sugar imbalances and problems with detoxification. When mangosteen is consumed on a daily basis, I believe it will promote healing of the gut, stop antigen/anti-body reactions and reduce the allergic reactions of the body. If it can do this, the normal barrier of the gut returns and life gets better.

HYPERACTIVITY, ADD, AND ELEMENTAL IMBALANCES

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) are associated with heavy metal toxicity. Children absorb toxins much more readily than adults and eliminate them much slower than we do. Heavy metals cause or aggravate many conditions. One of these is lead. It is a potent toxin, most often associated with a host of neurobehavioral problems in children, including hyperactive, attention-deficit, and learning disorders. A leading expert on the effects of lead toxicity in children, Dr. H.L. Needlemen of the University of Pittsburgh Medical School, has conducted scores of studies over the last 20 years clearly establishing the link between lead levels in children and specific hyperactive and attention deficit behavior traits.

According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, an estimated one out of every six children in the United States has blood-lead levels in the toxic range. Additionally, researchers have discovered that the amount of lead necessary to produce abnormal central-nervous-system conditions is far lower than previously realized. Many other element imbalances are also strongly implicated in hyperactive behavior. A pilot study on metal levels in the hair of hyperactive children, for example, found raised levels of manganese and reduced levels of zinc, compared with levels found in a control group. Furthermore, increased intake of heavy metal toxins such as lead, aluminum, cadmium, and mercury can increase the likelihood of toxic reactions that trigger hyperactivity. Xanthones are thought to be a heavy metal chelator, helping the body get rid of heavy metal toxins. They are definitely efficient in preventing the consumption of heavy metals through reestablishing a normal gut barrier and reducing the symptoms of leaky gut.

HYPERACTIVITY, ADD, AND AMINO ACIDS

ADD and ADHD are often related to neurotransmission dysfunctions of the central nervous system. This means that these conditions can be affected by the levels of serotonin in the body. Serotonin, a chemical relaxant produced from amino acid tryptophan, is normally present in high amounts in the central nervous system. Research has shown, however, that children with ADD and ADHD often show deficiencies of plasma serotonin and tryptophan.

The liver and amino acids, both essential and non-essential, can affect children with hyperactivity. According to one study, children with attention deficits may exhibit deficiencies in a number of amino acids including phenylalanine, tyrosine, tryptophan, histidine, and isoleucine.

As explained earlier, mangosteen helps restore gut and liver function, allowing the amino acids of the body to normalize and thus helping enhance the chemical serotonin levels in the brain.

Now, there’s a company that makes mangosteen commercially available. The whole mangosteen fruit is pureed and bottled by Xango thru Wild Flavors as a juice.

RECOMMENDED SERVING WHEN DRINKING XANGO JUICE

Take one ounce (30ml) per day. Serving can be increased to one (1) ounce three times a day after a week. Drink eight to ten glasses of water every day to help flush out toxins.

Mangosteen and Autism

Posted by Global Pinoy on March 19, 2007

Autism is generally considered an abnormality in brain structure or function. Once believed to be a rare disease, autism is now considered to be on the rise. It is estimated that almost one out of every 100 children is diagnosed as autistic. Autism is manifest in such behavior as self-injury, mood swings, isolation and verbal communication skill deficiencies. The exact cause of autism is not yet known, but there is scientific research that relates it to a myriad of conditions in the body. Gastrointestinal disorders, toxicity, neurogenic disorders, and poor dietary habits are some disorders that researchers believe could aggravate symptoms in autistic children and adults.

AUTISM AND IMPAIRED CUT PERMEABILITY

There have been numerous studies that correlate abnormal gut permeability to gastrointestinal imbalances, food allergies, protein absorption problems, bacterial and fungal overgrowth, and nutritional deficiencies in tryptophan (an essential amino acid) and zinc. One study conducted in Rome found that 43 percent of autistic children had a higher rate of intestinal permeability when compared to a controlled group of other children. Researchers believed that an altered intestinal permeability could represent a possible mechanism for the increased passage through the gut mucosa of peptides derived from foods causing subsequent behavioral abnormalities. In other words, the GI function is abnormal and is allowing more amino acids (peptides) to permeate into the bloodstream than is needed for a healthy body. These scientists hypothesize that behavior abnormalities are caused by this increase of amino acids in the bloodstream. Because amino acids are primary building blocks of neurotransmitters (which influence mood and behavior), it is possible that any imbalance of amino acids in the body may have an effect on a person’s mood and behavior. Some researchers feel there is a correlation between symptoms in autistic children and amino acid digestion. Better digestion and assimilation of essential amino acids may play a prime role in the health of an autistic individual.

AUTISM AND ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS

Another factor believed to possibly contribute to the rise in diagnoses of autism is an imbalance in fatty acid ratios. Essential fatty acids are critical for normal brain function, and low levels of essential fatty acids in the developmental stages can lead to abnormal brain development. The ratio between Omega 6 and Omega 3 intake diet is commonly out of balance. In the early 1900s, Omega 6:3 ratios were 4:1. In the late 1980s, this ration has risen to a staggering 25:1. This Omega 6 overbalance is due primarily to the increased use of vegetable oils and grain oils and the reduction of fish and flaxseed oils in our diets. Fatty acid imbalance causes a reaction throughout the body on the cellular level by stimulating the production of inflammatory prostaglandin that causes swelling at the cellular level throughout the body. Another possible complication from an overbalance of Omega 6 oils in the body is the oxidization of the cell membrane. Oxidation is linked to an increase in free radicals in the bloodstream. In addition, neurotransmitters like serotonin may also be affected by a fatty acid imbalance. In fact, one study demonstrated that autistic children were often found to have significantly higher Omega 6 levels. Low Omega 3 levels were linked to hyperactivity and frequent or excessive tantrums, both characteristic of autistic children. A researcher wrote, “Abnormalities of fatty acid and membrane phospholipids may play a part in a wide range of neurodevelopment and psychiatric disorders.” A possible treatment for fatty acid imbalances is to use something on a daily basis that has the ability to counter oxidation and the inflammatory processes that are both induced by dietary problems associated with fatty acid imbalance. Xanthones in mangosteen are powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents.

AUTISM AND MELATONIN IMBALANCE

Melatonin is a hormone secreted in response to the light/dark cycle of the body. It also is responsible for controlling body temperature, hormonal changes, and the body’s internal clock. At night, melatonin levels rise in response to the body’s need to sleep. In the morning hours, these levels diminish, allowing the body to become more alert. Interruption in the sleep cycle has been linked to drops in melatonin production. Scientific research has suggested that autistic children are much more susceptible to sleep cycle disturbances. This suggests that children with autism may produce lower levels of melatonin so that their internal clocks are poorly regulated. Further more, clinical research has linked abnormal levels of tryptophan and serotonin, both of which the body uses as source material for producing melatonin, to autistic behavioral symptoms in adults. Melatonin is also a powerful antioxidant that has both fat and water-soluble qualities, allowing it to cross the blood/brain barrier. This is very important as it keeps the brain cells healthy and free from free radical oxidative stress, which may alleviate some autistic symptoms. Mangosteen’s xanthones help in preventing tryptophan, serotonin, and melatonin imbalances. This, in turn, may help symptoms of autism.

AUTISM AND FOOD ALLERGIES

It has been noted that many autistic patients are sensitive to certain foods. Consumption of these foods appear to increase autistic symptoms and episodes of these patients. Children with autism may display increased permeability of the intestinal mucosa (leaky gut) allowing more peptides from foods to enter the bloodstream and trigger immune system reactions that may be associated with behavioral abnormalities. If this is the case, the anti-inflammatory capabilities of xanthones in mangosteen can have a positive effect on the reduction of allergic episodes in autistic patients. Not only do xanthones help ease inflammation of the gut, they also kill parasites and bacteria that aggravate GI inflammation and “leaky gut syndrome.”

AUTISM AND HEAVY METALS

Children are particularly susceptible to the deleterious effects of heavy metal exposure for many reasons. First, their developing nervous systems are more sensitive. Second, their bodies absorb toxins more rapidly but clear them from the system more slowly than adults. Lastly, a child’s blood/brain barrier, the natural protective mechanism that blocks harmful substances from entering and damaging the brain, is not fully formed until age 1. Investigators have found that damage to the mucosa in the form of “leaky gut” has been present in over 40 percent of autistic children tested. This gastrointestinal dysfunction would allow greater amounts of toxins (heavy metals) to penetrate the gut barrier into the systemic circulation (blood stream), and thus increase the toxic burden in children unable to properly process this onslaught of toxic agents. In other studies, scientists hypothesize that autistic children have problems metabolizing and detoxifying certain compounds due to an impaired biochemical process called sulfation (a process occurring in the liver). Sulfation plays an important role in the second phase of liver detoxification. Impaired sulfation could make autistic children more vulnerable to multiple chemical sensitivities. It could also explain an increase of behavioral problems after children eat foods containing phenol, tyramine, and phenyl compounds, which are normally neutralized through the sulfation process. Sulfation is a normal function of the liver. Phase 2 detoxification of the liver is dependent on normal gut function. “Leaky gut syndrome” is an abnormal function of the intestinal tract that leads to abnormal liver function. Through good diet and supplementation with mangosteen, we have the ability to change body function back to the norm. The tremendous anti-inflammatory abilities of xanthones and the juices powerful anti-oxidant capabilities may help reduce peptide imbalance caused by “leaky gut” and thereby relieve some autistic symptoms.

Xango, mangosteen juice - the miracle food supplement. Anyone?

Posted by Global Pinoy on March 1, 2007

Xango was introduced to me by my friend in the Philippines. He shared with me that this mangosteen juice contains a lot of nutrients more potent than Vitamin E and Vitamin C. So my wife and I tried it. Here are some interesting benefits that we derived from drinking it:

  • My wife has insomnia, after drinking mangosteen juice (2 ounces twice a day) for 3 days, she’s already asleep by 11:30 pm.
  • I usually have migraine in the afternoon, after drinking mangosteen juice (2 ounces twice a day) for 4 days, I am totally headache free.

I was so amazed with the results so I did some readings and research. Here’s what I found:

Mangosteen has been used by traditional practitioners of Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines and Africa for its varied medicinal applications. These applications include:

  • antimicrobial agent
  • treatment for skin diseases
  • anti-inflammatory agent
  • analgesic (pain reliever)
  • antidiarrheal treatment
  • gastrointestinal aid

Dr. J. Frederick Templeman, a primary care physician, board certified in the US & Canada, with over 20 years clinical experience and a medical director of Phytoceutical Research states that the human body is a remarkable creation, capable of caring for and repairing itself - but only if it receives the necessary nutrients (raw materials) to do so. When a state of disequilibrium occurs, we can only assist the body in its efforts to restore optimal health.

There are a variety of measures we can utilize to help our bodies recover from illness. Improved diet, stress relief, and increased physical activity are a few things that can make a tremendous difference in our state of health. Sometimes even these are not enough.

Supplementation also plays a critical role in assisting the body to both prevent and combat disease. Which supplements should we take? Well, each of our bodies is different, so each of our needs is slightly different as well. If you think of your body as own personal laboratory, and you “experiment” with different supplements to achieve better health, you will soon be able to determine which products your body can use most effectively.

Dr. Templeman feels that natural supplements offering the broadest range of phytonutrients to the body are those you should consider first. In this regard, the mangosteen fruit possesses a wide range of phytonutrients, including xanthones. But xanthones are only half the story. The fruit also contains catechins and proanthocyanidins, both classes of polyphenols shown to have great nutritional value for the body. Mangosteen also possesses polysaccharides and sterols, two groups of compounds also thought to possess a variety of potential health benefits.

Dr. Templeman adds: “If you are in poor health, or are simply looking to lower your risk of disease, I encourage you to experiment with the mangosteen fruit in the laboratory of your own body to determine how it will put this amazing fruit to use.”

In addition to what I’ve learned, the bulk of the nutrients comes from the pericarp or rind of the mangosteen fruit.

Here are some interesting research and results of preclinical studies which provide the evidence that these nutrients can be used by the body:

ATHEROSCLEROSIS. Cathecin research on mangosteen has demonstrated the following in the area of atherosclerosis (the process of fatty substances, cholesterol, cellular waste products, calcium and fibrin (a clotting material in the blood) building up in the inner lining of an artery. The buildup that results is called plaque.):

  • Decreased liver production of LDL and VLDL (bad cholesterol)
  • Protection of the LDL molecule from free radical damage (antioxidant effect more potent that Vitamin C)
  • Decreased amount of absorption and digestion of dietary facts
  • Normalization of endothelial cell function in the artery so that adhesion substances are not formed
  • Inhibition of the growth factors that cause smooth muscle cells in the walls of arteries to grow abnormally and form plaque
  • Inhibition of bacterial proliferation in the mouth that leads to gum disease and the possible infection of arterial plaque
  • Dampening of the inflammatory response, which leads to plaque rupture and triggers the coagulation cascade that produces the deadly blood clot
  • Inhibition of thrombin-induced clot information (the coagulation cascade)

Xanthone research has revealed the following properties:

  • Antioxidant activity (surpassing that of Vitamin E) that protects LDL particles from free radical damage in laboratory studies
  • Antibacterial action to prevent the infection of plaques
  • Anti-inflammatory activity capable of dampening the inflammation, which can lead to plaque rupture

Proanthocyanidin research has revealed the following properties:

  • Antioxidant activity to protect LDL particles from free radical damage
  • Antibacterial effects
  • Normalization of endothelial vasolidatory function in the arteries through the increased production of Nitric oxide
  • Antithrombotic (anticlotting) effect
  • Anti-inflammatory effect to lessen the probability of plaque rupture
  • Regulation of adhesion molecule production by endothelial cells

Sterol research has revealed the following properties:

  • Normalization of lipid production to prevent the excessive formation of LDL

Polysaccharide research has revealed the following properties:

  • Antibacterial effect

CANCER. Cathecin research in the area of cancer has revealed:

  • Protection of DNA from damage by free radicals and other mutagens
  • Repair of damaged DNA before cancer begins
  • Inhibition of the inappropriate production of growth factors which promote cancer
  • Inhibition of the proteolytic enzymes, which cancerous cells produce to invade normal tissue and to mestatasize
  • Protection of skin from UV damage
  • Inhibition of the production of pro-inflammatory mediators which promote cancer growth
  • Chemoprotection (by unelucidated mechanisms) from many different types of cancer
  • Anti-tumor effect by the induction of apoptosis or cell death in cancer cells

Xanthone research in the area of cancer has revealed:

  • Protection of DNA from damage by free radicals
  • Induction of apoptosis (cell suicide) in tumor cells of several types of cancer
  • Anti-tumor efficacy (in vitro) of garcinone E (a mangosteen xanthone), surpassing the effect of five commonly utlized chemotherapy agents

Proanthocyanidin research in the area of cancer has shown:

  • Inhibition of the production of protein-dissolving agents produced by cancer cells to invade normal tissue and to metastasize

INFLAMMATION. The body’s non-specific response to virtually all insults (such as infection, trauma, radiation damage, allergen irritation, etc.) is inflammation. Characterized by swelling, redness, heat and pain, most inflammation is short-lived and an important part of the healing process. However, too often inflammation does not shut off when it should and can continue for weeks, months, or years (chronic inflammation). When this occurs, the inflammation itself (which can be painless and therefore silent) becomes a serious health threat.

Although not a disease per se, chronic inflammation has been implicated in the development of many health problems including cancer, arthritis, diabetes, skin disorders, heart disease, neurodegenerative diseases (such as MS, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s), lung disease, inflammotory bowel disease (Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis), ulcers, gastritis, GERD, allergy, kidney failure and even psychiatric disorders like depression, autism and schizophrenia. And this list is not complete because other illnesses have been shown to involve inflammatory states as greater or lesser causatory or exacerbating factors.

Cathecin research in the area of inflammation shows:

  • Ability to chelate iron and copper, two metals frequently involved in the production of free radicals
  • Excellent antioxidant activity that even exceeds the antioxidant power of vitamin C

Xanthone research in the area of inflammation shows:

  • Antioxidant capability which exceeds that of vitamin E
  • All 43 mangosteen xanthones have antioxidant capability
  • The capability of blocking the most common inflammatory cascade (arachadonic acid to prostaglandin E2) at the genetic level (COX-2 blockade)
  • Antioxidant effect in an animal experiment that equaled the power of the drug dexamethasone and exceeded the effect of the drug Indomethacin

Proanthocyanidin research in the area of inflammation shows:

  • Effective inhibition of the proinflammatory enzyme COX-2 (again at the level of the COX-2 gene)
  • The ability to inhibit the formation of copper-linked free radicals
  • Chemoprotective effects on cells threatened with inflammatory damage

Useful information on CANCER

Posted by Global Pinoy on February 19, 2007

On my previous blog, Dr. Templeman says that there is no reliable cure for cancer. What follows is very informative. If you think this is helpful, I urge you to pass this on to the people you care. You may be giving hope to those who have cancer or those who are wary about cancer.

1. Every person has cancer cells in their body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.

2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person’s lifetime.

3. When the person’s immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.

4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastro-intestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction.

9. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications.

10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.

11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.

CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

A. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in colour. Better alternative is Bragg’s aminos or sea salt.

B. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened Soya milk cancer cells are being starved.

C. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.

D. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).

E. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine. Mangosteen juice or green tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. Water: it is best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

F. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrefied and leads to more toxic build-up.

G. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body’s killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

H. Some supplements build up the immune system (anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the body’s own killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements like Xanthones (richly found in the rind of mangosteen fruit, please search Xanthones on pubmed website, http://www.pubmed.gov for more details) are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body’s normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.

I. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life.

J. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.
